Railway medicals are mandatory under the Rail Safety National Law (RSNL), which establishes a national framework for rail safety regulation across all Australian states and territories. The National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers (2024) sets out the detailed health assessment criteria to ensure all rail safety workers (including train drivers, track workers, and signal operators) are medically fit for their roles.
Category 1 (High Risk, e.g., Train Drivers):
Medical History Review - Identifying past and current health conditions.
Physical Examination - Focusing on cardiovascular, neurological, and general health.
Cardiovascular screening including electrocardiogram (ECG)
Diabetes Screening
Audiometry (Hearing Test) - Ensuring compliance with workplace safety standards..
Vision Test - Evaluating eyesight, including visual acuity and peripheral vision, to meet driving and industry standards.
Drug and alcohol screening
Cognitive, mental health and sleep assessment where applicable.
Category 2 (Moderate Risk, e.g., Signaller):
Medical history and physical exam
Vision and hearing testing
Drug and alcohol screening
Cardiovascular risk assessment if clinically indicated
Category 3 (Low Risk, e.g., Administrative Staff):
Basic health screening with focus on vision, hearing, and mobility
