What Does the Assessment Include?
How to Prepare for Your Coal Board Medical?
Getting Started
Under Queensland law, all coal mine workers—both new and existing—must undergo regular health assessments to detect early signs of occupational illnesses, such as lung disease and hearing loss. These assessments are mandatory under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017.
Our comprehensive Coal Board Medical includes:
Medical History Review - Identifying past and current health conditions.
Physical Examination - Assessing general health and fitness for mining work.
Spirometry (Lung Function Test) - Checking for early signs of lung disease.
Audiometry (Hearing Test) - Ensuring compliance with workplace safety standards..
Vision Test - Evaluating eyesight, including visual acuity and peripheral vision, to meet driving and industry standards.
Urinalysis - Screening for underlying medical conditions, such as kidney disease and diabetes.
Chest X-ray - Conducted under the RSHQ-approved ILO classification.
Functional Capacity Assessment (if requested) - Ensuring physical ability for job demands.
To ensure a smooth assessment process, please follow these preparation guidelines:
If you take any medications or puffers, bring the details including name and dose.
If you are treated by a specialist, bring any recent letters or reports from them.
Wear appropriate clothing – Loose-fitting attire and comfortable shoes suitable for squatting and other physical movements.
Avoid stimulants (coffee, energy drinks) on the morning of your appointment, as they can increase blood pressure and cause arrhythmias.
If you use hearing aids, bring them with you.
If you take puffers, contact our office beforehand, as you may need to withhold them before spirometry testing.
Be prepared to provide a urine sample by staying hydrated before the appointment.
If you have had a chest X-ray in the past year, confirm the date of the scan.
